About The Event

The River Oaks Theatre has been a mecca for cinema lovers in Houston for over 80 years. The best arthouse, independent and foreign films ever made have been shown on the screens of this iconic Houston landmark. Hundreds of homegrown independent filmmakers have premiered their movies for the Houston community at the River Oaks theater. But this all could be coming to an end very soon. The theater is once again facing a threat of being shut down and redeveloped by the building’s owner, Weingarten Realty. WE MUST FIGHT TO SAVE THIS THEATER!

Join Academy Award nominated filmmaker Richard Linklater (“Boyhood”), arthouse film distributor Bob Berney (Picturehouse), Minette Boesel (Houston Archeological & Historical Commission), Houston Chronicle film critic Cary Darling, historian and author David Welling (“Cinema Houston”) and filmmaker/moderator Kyle Henry ("Room") as they discuss the historical, cultural and economic importance and viability of the LAST operating historic movie theater in Houston - The River Oaks Theatre. #SaveOurCinemas
